Ligue 1 defending champions Paris St Germain dropped to the red zone after a humilating 1-0 loss at the hands of their bitter rivals Olympique Marseille in sunday’s late kick off match.

French forward Florian Thauvin returned from injury to give the visiting team a lead that turned to be the only goal of the game after converting a Dimitr Payet’s free kick at the half hour mark.

Neymar’s efforts to find and equalizer were neutralised by short stopper Steve Mandanda at the hour mark before Di Maria’s goal was disallowed for offside two minutes later. The hosts dominated the game but failed to find the back of the net.

The game ended with five red cards issued in the added time after Layvin Kurzawa embroiled himself with Jordan Amavi following the former’s tackle that had already been fouled. The two received matching orders for their unsportsmanlike behaviour before Leandro Paredes and Dario Beneditto received their second yellow cards of the game. Neymar was ordered off the pitch after VAR captured him knock Alvaro Gonzalez on the back of the head.

Neymar and Di Maria had returned to the squad after recovering from Covid 19. They had tested positive alongside Marquinhos and Icardi who were not in the squad. They had contracted the virus after a club approved trip to Ibiza, Spain after the Champions League Final. Mbappe, who was also missing in the squad tested positive while on international duty with France.

The win was Marseille’s first in 9 years after a 3-0 win in November 2011. PSG’s loss brought the tally to three consecutive defeats including their 1-0 loss to Bayern Munich in the Champions League Final.

On Thursday, the Parisians, who were without key players, suffered a shock 1-0 away defeat to the newly promoted side Lens. This brings the Ligue 1 defending champions to the third-last position in the standing after matchday 2.
